Learn with Freeware

I am all about getting deals. That’s why I write about AMS every day. However what is the one thing better than a good deal? Something free. If you haven’t started using music freeware, you are missing out. Basically there are tons of generous programmers out there who like to work on group projects and develop freeware. Granted this stuff usually doesn’t run as well as the expensive programs, and it might have a few kinks, but it is FREE! A good site to get you started with some freeware and shareware is hitsquad
Perhaps an even better site yet is http://freemusicsoftware.org/category/free-audio-software
That site has loads of free music software which is categorized very nicely. For example you can choose from “audio and midi sequencers,” “audio analysis,” “audio editors,” and tons of other categories loaded with free music software. If you have never tried branching out into freeware, now might be the time.
Additionally, freemusicsoftware has software for every OS so it doesn’t matter whether you are running mac, windows, or linux, they have you covered.
Don’t forget that there are plenty of other sites out there with great freeware. If you have a knack for computer science, most of these programs publish their code for you to freely edit and post on the web. You may be able to get these free programs and then customize them even further.

Cheaper Music for Everyone

Today I wanted to take a break from my usual posts about music gear and suggest something that would benefit EVERYONE in the music community from artists to customers. Well actually, the record companies might not benefit, but I’m ok with that.

Why don’t more bands begin recording in their own studios and selling music through their websites and traditional mediums such as walmart, target ect? I am proposing a complete boycott of Itunes. If every band kept selling their music through regular stores like Target but stopped selling on Itunes, something wonderful would occur. Patrons would be forced to buy either a hard copy of the cd, at which they tend to pay 1 dollar per song. OR . . . patrons would buy music via the musicians website where they would pay about .85 cents per song. Right now only .65 goes to the musicians and their affiliates through Itunes. Itunes takes .35 for every song sold. If we could eliminate them as a middle man, every musician could start selling music for 15 cents cheaper while making an additional 20 cents per song. Therefore the musicians profits go up by about 30 percent while our prices go down by 14 percent. Everybody wins except for Itunes. Additionally if more musicians began recording in their own studios and promoting themselves, they would have less people to share profits with. This would mean yet another discount in the price of music.

Music Price Gouging

When you are looking through your favorite tracks on the Itunes store, do you ever feel like some price gouging is going on? I mean really, since when is it ok to break the .99 threshold and start charging 1.20 for a single song? Does anyone else feel like it might be encouraging piracy to charge that much for one song? After all, if you are eliminating the costs of production to produce a CD, while also eliminating the retail storefronts, shouldn’t music cost less than ever? Granted Itunes takes about .35 for every song sold. If that’s the case, why are songs starting to cost more than a dollar on Itunes? Under the old model, there was .64 cents to be distributed to the artists and the record companies. I can’t help but wonder how high song tracks will go within the coming years. It is my hope that recording artists will get wise and realize that they can only push the consumer so far. If you jack up the prices too high, you are bound to alienate your customers or encourage piracy. There is a threshold for purchasing music. More than a buck a song is breaking the threshold in a big way.

What do you think about this issue? If music gets much more expensive on Itunes, will it be justifiable to download music illegally? One argument for the price increases is that the patrons of Itunes are strongly opposed to stealing music so they will never switch to another music procurement medium. However I tend to disagree with that viewpoint. I think you can only push music consumers so fart before they will start stealing music.

Expert Product Advice

If you are looking for some specific guidance on music related gear, you have to check out the chat page on AMS. The chat page puts you in contact with registered AMS product specialists who will help determine your needs based on what you tell them. You tell them about your music needs such as what kind of venues you perform at or if you need recording options ect. They will then make helpful product suggestions based on your specific needs. It is not one of those cases where they are pushing you for a sale. You are basically chatting through a portal like instant messenger about music gear. You will be talking with specialists who love music and want to help you out. It's no high pressure sales pitch.
Even if you just want to learn a little more about the technology, I would encourage you to visit the AMS chat help board here.
If we are all being honest, music technology can be very complicated. One of the goals of this blog is to help explain available music technology and various instruments so that musicians have a better understanding of the gear that can help them perform better. However you will find that AMS houses tons of products. Unfortunately I can't write a post on every item on AMS. That's why you should check out the chat portal at AMS so that you can ask specific questions to a live person on the other end, any time you want.

Here is a recent user review which sums it up:
If you are looking for an exceptional digital piano at a great price, the Yamaha YDP223 won't let you down. Excellent weighted key action, beautiful rich sounds...especially when the piano and strings are layered during performance. Peavy, Robinson & Houston used the Yamaha YDP223 Digital Piano in studio recording sessions. For optimal recording purposes, Peavy, Robinson & Houston set the piano tone slider to bright, and recorded the keyboard and strings tracks separately (no layering effects while recording). Get Your Recording Studio

I am a big fan of having your own recording setup. When you are first starting out, you don't need to have the best recording options. Really, all you need is something to record your band in a decent manner so that you can upload your music to the web and burn some cds. Don't let all the pricey recording equipment intimidate you. Today I will help you find out what you need for basic recording. First and foremost, a computer. If you are reading this, you already have that piece of the equipment. If you want to go real basic, try grabbing an inexpensive handheld recorder which you can find here, at AMS

If you want one step up, check out the Zoom HD16CD Digital Multitrack Recorder. This recorder actually gives you the option of recording to your computer or burning strait to a cd, which makes this an incredibly portable solution. This setup is highly customizable so you can make some truly professional sound. Right now you can grab it on AMS for 539.95 which is 600 less than it costs anywhere else. While 500 bucks is still a lot of money, it's not for what you get. It comes with all the audio inputs you will need and an advanced mic which is great with noise reduction and only picking up the good stuff. This setup has everything you need to get started.

To learn more about the Zoom HD16CD check it out at AMS.

Call in Sale

AMS is currently having a three day long call in sale where you can purchase Korg gear for deeply discounted prices. Right now the prices are so low that AMS is not legally allowed to publish them on the website.

When AMS sells items for deeply discounted prices they cannot publish the rates because of agreements with distributors. Typically distributors don’t like vendors to sell items too inexpensively because it lowers the perceived value of the item. That is why when AMS has specials, you will sometimes have to enter your email address or call in in order to learn the price of the item you are considering. Rest assured, it is worth the extra effort!

If you want to call in for some of the best deals of a lifetime, the number is 1800 458 4076. You have to mention the cod “fireworks” to get the special fourth of July promo rates. The lines are open 24/7 so call at your convenience.

Some items included in the sale are:

Korg M3 61 Key Synthesizer Workstation Sampler

Korg D3200 Digital Multitrack Recorder

Korg M50 88 Key Synthesizer Keyboard

Korg M3 88 Key Synthesizer Workstation Sampler
