The Power of Free Youtube

Yesterday I advocated the use of youtube and all of the free resources it has available. For example you can learn to do just about anything on youtube. Since I didn't post links to any of the great tutorials on youtube yesterday, I thought I would list some here today.

I pretty much rely on the internet to find out just about everything. From music lessons to learning to tie a tie, youtube is the place to go for free lessons!

Do you have any other suggestions for free music lessons or tutorials online? Are there other sites I have missed out on? For those of you who have used free tutorials and sites online, how was your experience with them?

Leverage Youtube

Youtube is the place to go for some good old fashioned free advice. Say you want to learn some new skills on the guitar . . . head on over to youtube. There are hundreds and hundreds of how to guitar videos for you to sort through. Granted not all of the videos are as good as the kind you buy but there are plenty available of high quality for you and your kids to learn from. Furthermore I believe this extends to every aspect of life. If you want to learn something, leverage the power of free information on the internet by using sites such as youtube in order to augment your skills at just about anything. This is specifically applicable for something as popular as music. There are videos for every kind of music. There are videos which teach you how to read music and which teach you to play the flute, clarinet, drums, guitar, bass, and anything else you can imagine. You can even learn how to play the bagpipes online if you want.

Once you have exhausted these free resources and you are ready for something more comprehensive, head on over to AMS where there are plenty of professional grade teaching dvds and tools. I will admit that these DVDs are better than the videos on youtube. They should be since they cost roughly 20 bucks a piece. However I am suggesting that you first check out the videos on youtube and then check out the professional videos on AMS which are actually cheaper than anywhere else on the web.

Ibanez BTB776PB 6 String Electric Bass Guitar

Ibanez has done it yet again with the creation of the BTB776PB 6 String Electric Bass Guitar on AMS. This guitar is perfect for low tunings and is comes standard with everything you need to churn out huge tone. Furthermore this guitar has more sex appeal than any other guitar on the market. It comes complete with the Bartolini MK2 pickups which give a rich tone and strong response. It also has deeper cutaways which lets you get the upper frets.
For those of you who have never played a six string bass, I would highly recommend it. It can add a strong distinction to your music which will help brand and endear you to your fans. I have to say Ibanez makes one of the strongest guitars on the market.

$1 mics at AMS

Do you need a new mic for a great price? Right now AMS is having a sale where you get a mic for 1 dollar when you buy any rode mic. Basically it is a buy one get one free sale except the rode mics are already deeply discounted. AMS is selling these mics for so low they aren’t even allowed to advertise the prices. That is why it might say “too low to show” when you look for products on AMS. In those cases you just give them your email and American musical supply will send you an email with the price. AMS stocks merchandise at such low prices that manufacturers won’t let AMS advertise the prices because it is “unfair” to the other competition.

For example you can get the top of the line Rode NT1A mic for under 200 dollars. When you buy that mic, you also can get another for just 1 dollar. Basically you end up paying 100 bucks for each mic. However this is a summer sale so if you want to learn more, visit AMS

AMS also has several other rode mics available which qualify for the 1 dollar mic program. It is part of a summer sale so act fast. To find your perfect mic, visit AMS.

Tips for Teaching Music to Youngsters

If you have ever tried to teach a child music, you probably found it to be more difficult than anticipated. Today I hope to offer a few of my own suggestions in the hopes that you might also add yours to make a comprehensive list. First and foremost, don't go straight to the sheet music, especially if your child is young. Some people start teaching kids music as young as four years old. At that age, teaching a child notes can be a daunting task. You will get much greater interest from your child if you simply give them the instrument and guide them through a few notes. After you have established some interest from the child, you can begin teaching notes. To do this, it can be very helpful to color code different notes. Kids are very interested by color and it will help them remember better to have different colored notes. As an example, use green for a G note. Using the first letter of the color to match with the note is very helpful. If you want, you can then tell the child to play a green note, ect.

For kids that are a little older, consider using Garageband to teach your kids music. Garageband has several interactive features and lessons which are conducted by famous musicians such as Ben Folds, Norah Jones and John Fogerty.

Lastly, remember to switch things up. whatever you end up doing to teach your kids music, remember that children's attention spans are short running. If something works at first but then loses its influence, it's time to switch to a new strategy.

Please let me know of any exercises or programs you find useful for teaching children!
